Penn State and Northwestern will make history when they meet in 2026. The match-up, which has now been moved to Friday, October 2, will be the first game played in Northwestern’s newly updated stadium, Ryan Field.

Northwestern’s first two home games will be played at Northwestern Medicine Field, which served as a temporary lakefront home while Ryan Field was being rebuilt.

Interestingly enough, Penn State’s match-up with Northwestern in 2025 also ended up making history. It was the final game of the James Franklin era, as the Wildcats upset the Nittany Lions 22-21. Franklin was fired the following day, ending a 12-season run as head coach in the midst of a three-game losing streak.

Northwestern finished with the same 7-6 record as Penn State in 2025, with a 6-6 regular season and a bowl victory in a blowout over Central Michigan.

This game will also mark Penn State’s Big Ten road opener, as they open conference play with Wisconsin at home on the previous Saturday, September 26.
