The 2025 season was a difficult one for everyone involved at Penn State — the team tied for its second-worst record in the James Franklin era and experienced an in-season coaching change — but it was especially difficult for pass-rusher Max Granville. The four-star defensive end was expected to be a big contributor last year after watching and learning for most of his freshman season, but he was sidelined for the entire 2025 campaign with an injury.

Now nearing full health, the Texas product is looking to have a breakout season and put his name on the map, and it sounds like the Nittany Lions’ coaching staff has some of the same expectations. Director of strength and conditioning Reid Kagy recently spoke about Granville’s prospects for 2026, telling reporters, “We’re really excited about what Max can do.”

He then went on to explain why he thinks the edge rusher is poised for a breakout year, saying Granville is “another guy that we’ve been super impressed with from a work-ethic standpoint… We’re excited for what he’s going to do this fall.”

Kagy’s praise and vote of confidence come a couple weeks after Granville garnered attention from some workout pictures that surfaced. He looks shredded and ready to annihilate any offensive lineman or running back in his path. Penn State will be counting on a big season from him to establish themselves as a fearsome pass rush.

Granville stands at 6-3 and weighs 252 pounds, making him around the optimal size for his position. He should be able to attack offensive linemen with strong speed- or power-rush moves depending on the situation to get through to the quarterback. Nittany Lions fans thought they might be getting a special talent when Granville committed a couple of years ago, and it seems like the coaching staff shares that belief.
