Pedri suffers hamstring injury against Slavia, likely to be ruled out for a month
Barcelona have suffered a major blow as star midfielder Pedri picked up a hamstring injury during the 4-2 win against Slavia Praha in the Champions League last night.
The 23-year-old was hauled off at the hour mark, with Dani Olmo replacing him.
Pedri will undergo further medical examinations today to determine the true extent of his injury, but Diario AS Journalist Javi Miguel has dismissed concerns about a long-term injury.
According to the reporter, Pedri has suffered a tear in the right leg’s biceps femoris, but can recover in less than a month.
The Catalan giants will be sweating over the fitness of the Spanish midfield maestro, who has been an irreplaceable cog in head coach Hansi Flick’s system.
It looks as though the heavy workload is once again taking a toll on Pedri. He suffered a torn hamstring on his left leg in October, which kept him out of action for a month.
The Spaniard has racked up two goals and eight assists in 25 games this season, while ranking sixth in the most minutes by a Barca player.
Pedri now looks set to miss a crucial string of fixtures for Barca, including their final UCL group game against Copenhagen next week.
With Barca maintaining a slender lead of one point at the top of La Liga, Pedri’s absence will be a massive setback for Flick’s side in the upcoming games.
Frenkie de Jong will take the onus in Pedri’s absence, while Flick can rely on Olmo, Marc Bernal, Eric Garcia, Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado to partner the Dutch midfielder.
Olmo and Fermin were on the scoresheet last night, playing a decisive role in Barca’s victory.
