Justin Raine Kamana’o-Bulosan pitched a five-hitter while striking out three as Pearl City defeated Curacao 5-0 to capture the Senior League Baseball (ages 13-16) World Series on Saturday in Easley, S.C.
Kamana’o-Bulosan also batted 2-for-2 with an RBI. Tytan Takahashi went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, Kysen Hueu drove in two runs and Boston Schwager, Friday’s winning pitcher in a 12-0 victory over Newark, Del., for the U.S. championship, scored two runs.
Pearl City jumped ahead early, with two runs in the first and one in the second. It added two more in the sixth.
In the bottom of the first, Schwager walked, Takahashi singled to right and Hueu walked to fill the bases with nobody out. Kamana’o-Bulosan then hit a sacrifice fly and Noah Propios singled to left for a 2-0 lead.
Pearl City went up 3-0 in the second. With two out, Schwager walked and Takahashi doubled him home. Hueu’s two-out, bases-loaded single in the sixth drove in Pearl City’s final two runs.
Kamana’o-Bulosan threw 93 pitches over seven innings, with 66 being strikes.
He faced minimal trouble in the first, giving up a leadoff single in the top half. But Curacao’s Daniel Perez was thrown out by catcher Graiden Duke attempting to steal second. Kamana’o-Bulosan then walked a batter before recording an inning-ending strikeout.
In all, Pearl City won five elimination games to capture the crown. After the opening loss, Pearl City reeled off wins over Laredo, Texas, 8-5 on Monday; Easley, S.C., 11-0 on Wednesday; 3-2 over Macon (Ga.) on Thursday, and Newark on Friday.
Kamana’o-Bulosan, Schwager, Takahashi, Hueu and Duke appeared to be key action figures for Pearl City in the World Series, which was held from Aug. 1-8.
In Friday’s whitewash of Newark in the U.S. championship, Schwager allowed four hits and struck out eight in six innings to help put Pearl City into the final against Curacao. Duke went 2-for-2 and drove in three, Hueu went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kamana’o-Bulosan batted 2-for-5.
Thursday’s win over Macon might have been Pearl City’s toughest.
Kamana’o-Bulosan’s hard grounder to third resulted in an error and scored Schwager in a walk-off win to vault Pearl City into the U.S. championship. That win avenged Pearl City’s opening-game 4-1 loss to Macon the previous Sunday. Hueu batted 3-for-3 and pitched a complete game, going seven innings and allowing one earned run while striking out five and walking none. Takahashi hit 2-for-4 in that game.
Against host Easley, Ryley Omine pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and struck out four and went 2-f0r-3 with four RBIs.
Against Laredo, Pearl City rallied from an early 4-3 deficit. Schwager earned the win in relief, pitching 51⁄3 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out nine and walking one. Kamana’o-Bulosan went 2-for-3 and Ryden Kohagura went 2-for-4, with two RBIs.
