Payon Tolle Opens Up About Having Flu During Near-Perfect Game Vs. Yankees originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Boston Red Sox rookie starting pitcher Payton Tolle was utterly dominant on Friday night in a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees.
He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before surrendering his one and only hit in what would become a seven-inning, seven-strikeout shutout start.
One would be shocked to find out that Tolle wasn't feeling 110% during the 82-pitch start. But as it turns out, the 23-year-old was battling an illness.
"Body aches, fever. Head felt fine, and I was not coughing or anything, but like, I laid in bed for a long time this morning," Tolle said. "Then I got here, got some DayQuil in me. I think that's why I hit the wall so hard in the seventh."
In case you were wondering what "hitting the wall" looks like for a world-class pitcher, Tolle surrendered his only two walks of the game in the seventh inning. He was still able to get three outs and send the first-place Yankees into the eighth with one hit and zero runs.
"I woke up this morning, and I was like, 'I don't feel great, but I'm gonna pitch today.'" Tolle said. "There were a couple times I was like, 'Do I tell anybody? Should I just push through this?'
"But yeah, it was a grinder one."
