Paul Pierce understands what Jaylen Brown is going through after the Celtics traded the star guard to a division rival earlier this month.
Pierce was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013, and revealed his message to Brown during a recent “No Fouls Given” episode.
“Although I think he feels like he doesn’t get the respect that he deserves maybe from the organization, but Jaylen has to understand this is what your career has been built on: Not being respected,” Pierce said. “You didn’t make the Olympic team. You’re not in the top five All-NBA, you know what I’m saying? This is what keeps you hungry, Jaylen.
“You have to come to the fact that, and I came to this realization as a Boston Celtic also, ‘Listen, I know I’m not respected like I feel like I should,’ but sometimes that’s what keeps you hungry,” he continued. “And sometimes those are the things that motivate you to keep you and drive you to become the player that you are today, which is a future Hall of Famer.”
Brown made it clear how he felt about being left off the men’s basketball roster during the 2024 Summer Olympics, and has never been afraid to air his grievances or say how he felt.
Brown, alongside Jayson Tatum, helped the Celtics to two NBA Finals, winning in 2024 when Brown was named Finals MVP.
The four-time All-Star drew criticism from fans after he said the 2025-26 season was his favorite. The Celtics played most of the year without Tatum as he recovered from an Achilles injury, but Brown turned in a career year by averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.

Brown’s name had been in trade rumors since Boston’s exit from the playoffs. He was reported to be the centerpiece in a trade package to the Milwaukee Bucks that would help the Celtics acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, but he was ultimately sent to the Miami Heat.
The Celtics traded Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and draft picks. Brown recently spoke out about the trade, calling out the Celtics for a lack of respect during the process.
“The message was received,” Brown said on his Twitch stream. “I wasn’t thrilled with the amount of respect that was shown throughout this process. I think there was a bit of lack of respect. I think it was fine at one point, then out of nowhere, things just went left. I think Brad (Stevens) is getting a lot of the criticism. I wasn’t thrilled with the way he facilitated some of the conversations.”
