SANTA CLARA, California — Josh McDaniels wearing a New England Patriots logo just feels right.
The longtime offensive coordinator returned to the team after Mike Vrabel was named head coach, becoming the leader of the offense that began with second-year quarterback Drake Maye. And, he took Maye, who was already an impressive player in the league, and helped turn him into an MVP candidate, as well as using every player on offense in the best way.
So, because of that, McDaniels was named the AP Assistant Coach of the Year on Thursday Night at the Annual NFL Honors Awards ahead of Super Bowl LX.
"Well, Josh has done a fantastic job, and usually any coach's success or recognition is going to come from the fact that the players executed, they played well and they did what was coached," head coach Mike Vrabel said earlier in the day. "And sometimes that happens, and sometimes it doesn't, but I would be extremely excited and happy for Josh if he were to win, just like I would be for Stef [Stefon Diggs], TreVeyon [Henderson], Drake [Maye] and everybody else.
McDaniels is in his third stint as Patriots offensive coordinator, holding the job from 2006 to 2008 before taking a head coaching job with the Denver Broncos. That only lasted just under two years before he was fired. He rejoined the Patriots from 2012 to 2021, but once again left for a head coaching job, this time with the Las Vegas Raiders. Once again, he didn't make it through his second year on the job, being fired midseason. He took the 2024 season off before coming back to New England at the start of this year.
But his resume as an offensive coordinator speaks for itself, having won six Super Bowls with the Patriots, with a chance to claim a seventh on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
