The Philadelphia Eagles may not have fully shut the door on the A.J. Brown conversation, but he certainly hasn't filled out a change-of-address form either. It won't be long before we're a month removed from Dianna Russini reporting talks had gone cold. General manager Howie Roseman spoke with the media recently at the NFL's annual league meeting. He didn't provide any additional context. "AJ Brown is a member of the Eagles." That's pretty much the point of what was said.
Another voice across the league just reinforced the current reality. Speaking recently as a guest on Kay Adams' Up & Adams show, Eliot Wolf, New England Patriots executive VP of player personnel, added his perspective to the ongoing speculation, and it sounded very familiar.
Much like Howie Roseman, Wolf kept things simple, but did you notice that last part? "We haven't had any conversations about anything regarding that in a long time." That doesn't necessarily slam the door on the conversation, but it does put something in perspective. In other words, the noise may be loud, but the substance remains quiet. These two teams seem no closer to an agreement than they were two weeks ago.
Wolf's comments are notable because they come from outside the organization, while Roseman's words can sometimes be viewed through the lens of strategy or negotiation. Wolf has little reason to deflect or obscure the situation. His statement adds weight to the idea that, at least for now, there's no active movement toward a deal. So, indeed, that aligns with the tone Roseman struck at the league meetings. He didn't go out of his way to deny trade speculation, but he also didn't provide any indication that something was imminent. Instead, he stuck to the simplest truth available. Brown is still on the roster.
Still, the conversation persists.
Part of that is due to Brown's stature. He's one of the league's premier wide receivers and a central piece of Philadelphia's offense. Players of that caliber rarely become available, and when rumors surface, they tend to take on a life of their own. Until there's a definitive statement that closes the door—or an actual move that changes everything—the speculation will continue to linger. That's the nature of the NFL, especially during the offseason.
For now, though, both sides are telling the same story.
Brown remains an Eagle, and according to those closest to the situation, and even those outside of it, there's been little to suggest that's changing anytime soon.
