The New England Patriots will get their first look at rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas on the practice field on Saturday.
Coach Mike Vrabel confirmed the news to media members ahead of the team's seventh training camp practice. Jacas is set to participate in a limited role, which won't include snaps during the team reps. The coaches are still working to get him up to speed with the rest of the team after he missed all of the spring and six training camp practices to this point.
"He'll be out there in a limited role," Vrabel said on Jacas. "We've talked to you about the return-to-play protocol that we have. So now he gets handed over to the coaches. It'll be in a limited role. He won't be involved in the team reps. Hopefully, Monday, we'll see him back out there."
Jacas, a 2026 second-round draft pick, was considered one of the most pro-ready players in the entire draft class. It's a wait-and-see situation on what he'll be able to contribute in Year 1, given all of the time he missed. However, the talent ceiling is very high for the former Illinois standout, and he has the potential to be a major force along the defensive front at some point.
It might be expecting too much for it all to happen right away, but the right kind of patience and development could create another game-changing playmaker on the Patriots' defense.
