The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles finally made a trade to send AJ Brown to New England. The trade seemed like a sigh of relief for both sides, as players on the Eagles certainly made their feelings known about how Brown was toward the back end of his time in Philadelphia, and the Patriots got one of the better wide receivers in the NFL.
There are some questions for both teams, but on the field, the Patriots have to feel like they were the better team.
The Eagles might share that belief given what they added in the offseason, but they'll have to prove they can still be one of the better teams in the NFL without one of the top wide receivers in the game.
Interestingly enough, it sounds like the Eagles all along understood that moving on from Brown wouldn't be an easy decision, and perhaps a move that would have a massive impact on their organization.
If they didn't, the Eagles probably would have agreed to a trade much earlier than they did. According to the latest report, this has been going on for quite some time now, with the Eagles even shutting down the idea of a trade multiple times.
“The Patriots have made a concerted effort, going back a few years now and particularly since drafting Drake Maye, of going after any top receiver who made noise about wanting to be traded the last few years. They went down the road on Brandon Aiyuk in 2024 with the Niners, but got shut down by Eagles GM Howie Roseman every time they checked in on Brown, including during the 2025 offseason and before the trade deadline in November…
"Wolf had told Roseman, at one point, 'If you get a 1 and a 2, go ahead and do it,'" Albert Breer reported. "But the Patriots never lost interest, with a dozen people who were with Vrabel in Tennessee vouching for Brown, and character crosschecks Pats people were doing with folks who’d been with Brown in Philly checked out, too. What stood out about Brown, even with all the drama he was tied to, was how he was described as a competitor, an alpha and a football junkie."
It doesn't come as much of a surprise that the Patriots were this interested in Brown, as it had been previously reported that the two sides were interested in playing together.
With his former Tennessee Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, as the head coach in New England, the reunion makes a lot of sense for both sides if he can do what's needed off the field and be a good teammate.
