The Patriots open the preseason against the Colts on Thursday, but before kickoff, New England make a roster move.

On Wednesday, the Patriots announced they signed running back Hassan Haskins to the active roster and waived Myles Montgomery with an injury designation as the corresponding move. Montgomery was an undrafted free agent who was fighting to earn a roster spot, but instead will head to Patriots injured reserve if no one claims him.

Haskins was a notable player in college for the University of Michigan, and the Titans took him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He hasn't quite found a longterm home in his NFL career, largely serving the role of a depth running back option for a few teams.

While Haskins addition won't make waves for the top of the depth chart, it could impact who makes the last few spots on the roster. He probably won't play tomorrow night but should get some opportunities when New England prepares for the second preseason game.

Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson have cementer their places in the top two spots, as the two combined for a strong running game last year. Stevenson is one of the more reliable backs in the league, while Henderson has explosiveness and upside that he showed in his rookie season.

Beyond those two players, the rest of the depth chart is pretty up for grabs. Larison, an undrafted free agent who was injured last year, is listed as the third running back, while veteran Jennings is behind him despite getting 36 carries over the past two seasons.

Rounding out the depth chart is Miller, a seventh-round pick out of Alabama, and the newly-signed Haskins. The competition should be intriguing as the Patriots decide who makes the Week 1 team.

Since entering the NFL in 2022, Haskins has bounced around the league but found a role as a backup running back for the Chargers over the last two years. Haskins has yet to surpass 100 yards rushing in a single season, but he has show the ability to provide value as a receiving back in that time.
