Patrick Kane is rejoining to the Chicago Blackhawks, but before he returns to where it all began, the future Hall of Famer is saying goodbye to the Detroit Red Wings and their fans.
Kane, 37, on Saturday posted a farewell to the franchise for which he played the past three seasons. Kane had 57 goals and 106 assists in three seasons with the Red Wings before signing a two-year deal this week with the Blackhawks, the organization with which he spent the first 16 seasons of his NHL career.
"Thank you to (owners) Marian and Chris Ilitch, Steve Yzerman, all the coaches, players, trainers, equipment managers, and everyone within the organization for making Detroit a special place for me and my family over the past few seasons."
Kane singled out a handful of his former teammates, including forward Alex DeBrincat, "one of my best friends in hockey" who also played with Kane in Chicago, before thanking the Red Wings faithful.
Kane reached a couple of career milestones with the Red Wings, setting an NHL record for the most points by a U.S.-born hockey player with his 1,375th career point in January to pass Westland's Mike Modano. He also joined the NHL's 500-goal club. Both were accomplished at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings failed to reach the postseason during Kane's time in Detroit, a streak that now sits at 10 seasons.
"Finally to the fans, wow what can I say ... the support I felt over the last few seasons was unbelievable. I never expected that coming from Chicago," Kane posted. "To score my 500th goal and 1,375th point at home at the LCA, in front of you was ... perfect. Thank you for all of your love. Sorry we couldn't get over the hump and get in the playoffs. That's all anyone wanted.
"It was truly an honor to be a Red Wing and I enjoyed every minute of it. To be part of a storied franchise and be welcomed with open arms is something my family and I will never forget. Thank you Detroit!"
Now, Kane returns to another storied franchise, where he won three Stanley Cups and the organization that selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
He also spent one season with the New York Rangers — another Original Six franchise — in 2022-23 before signing with the Red Wings.
