Parcells uses slur talking about trick plays

ESPN.com news services
IRVING, Texas -- Bill Parcells caused a a stir during his news conference after Dallas Cowboys minicamp Monday with offensive remarks. He called surprise plays used in practice "Jap plays," referring to Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

http://log.go.com/log?srvc=sz&a=1&d...id=C3068DE9-9273-471B-9BCC-28F6FEE3C9BF&goto=

"You've got to keep an eye on those two, because they're going to try to get the upper hand," Parcells said about quarterbacks coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. "Mike wants the defense to do well, and Sean, he's going to have a few ... no disrespect for the Orientals, but what we call Jap plays. OK. Surprise things."

After a murmur in the room of reporters, which included a Japanese journalist, Parcells repeated, "No disrespect to anyone."

"Bill Parcells is a brilliant coach," John Tateishi of the Japanese-American Citizen's League, a national civil rights group told DallasNews.com. "Unfortunately, he is ignorant about racial slurs. I take great offense by what he said. Parcells ought to know better. He sorely needs more education on what is offensive and non-offensive to Japanese-Americans. I am shocked that he would say this."

Parcells later released a statement, apologizing for his comments.

"Today during my news conference I made a very inappropriate reference, and although I prefaced it with the remark, 'no disrespect to anyone intended,' it was still uncalled for and inconsiderate. For that I apologize to anyone who may have been offended," he said.

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said the "organization apologizes to anyone who may have been offended."

Akira Kuboshima, editor of American Football Magazine in Japan, said he wasn't offended, though he knows many Japanese will be.

"There is a lot of chance for someone to feel offended," Kuboshima said. "To me, it was no big deal."

Parcells spoke to Kuboshima, offering what the reporter perceived to be an apology. Kuboshima said he was surprised more by the reaction of other reporters than the comment.

That comment was only part of Parcells' 45-minute session with reporters, in which he also talked about the team's quarterback competition, players at several positions and some of the new additions.

He said he isn't going to be as patient in his second season with the Cowboys.

After three straight 5-11 seasons, the Cowboys went 10-6 and reached the playoffs in their first year under Parcells. Still, he expects better in 2004.

"That doesn't mean we'll win more games," Parcells said. "That just means I think from head to toe that we have a chance to be better. I really believe that."

Wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who had two of his Pro Bowl seasons for Parcells while with the New York Jets, came to Dallas in a trade with Tampa Bay.

Vinny Testaverde was reunited with his old coach last week, leaving the Jets as a free agent. The 40-year-old quarterback will compete for the starting job with incumbent Quincy Carter and serve as a mentor to Drew Henson, who was added this spring after he quit professional baseball.

"These guys that were here last year, they've already bought into it. From that alone, we'll be a better team," running back Richie Anderson said. "We already know what to expect. He's not going to allow certain things to happen or go on."

What a tool, Orientals are not a group of people. Oriental is a style of food indigenous to southern pacific. :soapbox:

I just refer to them as being 'Asian', not sure if that is PC or not. Better than my old boss who called everyone 'Chinese' whether they were from China or not

For some reason I find the terms "Orientals" and "Chinaman" much worse than "Jap plays". That being said, what a tool!

I believe the PC term is, in fact, Asian.

What a dumb arse. Anytime you have to include the disclaimer "No disrespect to anyone" then you already know what you said or are about to say is, indeed, potentially offensive.

Nope Parcells is a genius. He's discovered a way to be as big of a jerk as you want to be with no repercussions because you did say no disrespect to anyone.

What's funny is him saying he realizes it was wrong and in that same admission he again said but I did say no disrespect intended. So he clearly still doesn't understand why it's offensive to someone.

This guy has got it right! If someone wants to find something to be offended/upset about he will find it easily. People really ought to lighten up!

Oh for God's sake, lighten up. This is exactly the reason everyone in the world is looking for an excuse to be a victim. Next we need to bring up slavery and see how much can be squeezed from we evil whites to pay for their plight. Sorry boys and girls, if I have to listen about how awful I and my dirt poor, farming ancestors were to every member of the human race from the Israelites to the Islamics, the Jews and the Germans, the Japanese and the African Americans, the 'Undocumented Immigrants' to the Iraqi prisoners, then don't expect me to jump on the PC bandwagon of guilt with all the other group huggers of the world.

If I'm such a bad guy, don't expect me to be sympathetic to every cause. Too many people wear their feeling on the shirt sleeves. They need to grow a set and stop the rightious indignation every time someone uses a metaphor that doesn't blow sunshine up their skirt. This whole subject is absolutely ridiculous.

Sorry about the rant guys, but I have just had my fill of ruffled self-worth with so many people these days. I got into an argument with someone the other day because I was taking a trip down memory lane and commented that we used to spend hours playing cowboys and Indians, or army, where we were fighting the germans and japanese. It's not that I'm that old, but when you have a dad that was a John Wayne fan, that's who you fight. Anyway, I got jumped on about how using guns to play with and having people of different ethnic origins be viewed as our enemies was horrible. Of course this came from a parent that has kids that look like ghosts from sitting inside all day and playing XBox for hours on end. The same XBox that has one ungodly violent game after another, but that was obviously not important.

Just for grins, does anyone else notice that a vast majority of commercials, cartoons and TV shows portray women (girls) as always winning races, games, fights, etc., and show boys as being also rans and screwups? Have I missed something? Do women now compete equally at all levels of competition and usually win? I'm a believer that we need to recognize that men and women are different and be damn glad they are. We seem to not want our male youth to be boys and our female youth to be girls. It gives people a false sense of reality and seems dangerous, kind of like that 90 lb. guy that keeps getting told that with these wonderful martial arts lessons, he can kick the snot out of a 300 lb. body builder. It may happen, but I wouldn't want to bet my life on it.

You go Lars!!

That sounded so much better than my reply of "Stop being a wuss!"

I too am tired of these people complaining about how horrible they have it here in America, racial slurs.... wow that's rough... people need to shrug it off and get on with their lives instead of dwelling on a statement made by a football coach about jap plays, what a joke.
