After picking up Bryce Young's fifth-year option, the Carolina Panthers are going full-speed ahead with the former No. 1 overall pick as their starting quarterback entering the 2026 NFL season. But while Young is unchallenged at the top of the depth chart, their other options leave a lot to be desired.
Carolina's new backup is Kenny Pickett—who is a lot younger than Andy Dalton, but otherwise offers no real improvement. The third-stringer is returning veteran Will Grier, who hasn't appeared in a game since 2019. And last, there's undrafted free agent Haynes King out of Georgia Tech.
Needless to say, the Panthers could use more help at the game's most important position. One option may present itself during the supplemental draft, where the top name to watch is Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby.
The Panthers are one of eight teams that have been named by CBS Sports as a potential landing spot for Sorsby, who was recently the subject of a controversial betting scandal. NFL draft analyst Josh Edwards writes:
To some analysts, Sorsby has a first-round grade—and that may be where he would get picked in next year's draft.
Sorsby began his college career at Indiana, where he only appeared in 11 games in two years—but showed real promise. He posted 1,595 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 127.4 QB rating. That was enough to earn him the starting job after transferring to Cincinnati, where Sorsby continued to rise—totaling 5,613 yards, 45 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 145.1 rating in 24 games.
Young could prove that he's not worth a long-term contract extension. In which case, the Panthers would be wise to look elsewhere for their franchise passer of the future. So perhaps looking in out-of-the-box places, like the supplemental draft, may be just what the doctor ordered.

Carolina picked up the fifth-year option of former No. 1 overall selection Bryce Young for the 2027 season, but they could absorb that dead salary cap hit with relative ease. If the Panthers come to the conclusion that Young's contributions are not worth his contract demands, then they could part ways as Cleveland did with Baker Mayfield.
