Pittsburg defeated Paden 54-49 due to a fourth quarter comeback Tuesday.
The Panthers started the game on the right foot, going up 11-4 midway through the first quarter and held a 15-6 lead going into the second period. But the Pirates began to chip away at the lead in the beginning of the second.
Paden went on a quick 6-0 run to start the second quarter and narrow the deficit to 15-12. With 32 seconds left, the Pirates hit a layup to give it a 19-17 lead, its first of the game.
At halftime Pittsburg trailed 21-17.
The lead continued to grow for Paden in the third as it outscored the Panthers 17-12 to hold a 36-29 lead going into the final period of play. The fourth quarter is where Pittsburg began its comeback.
Facing a 43-37 disadvantage with 3:41 left in the game, Aiden Whitmore went to the free throw line and knocked down a pair of free throws to begin a 6-0 run which would tie the game at 43 a piece. The two teams would tie and trade the lead a few more times before Karson Johnson went 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Panthers a 49-48 lead.
From there, Pittsburg went on a 5-1 run to seal the 54-49 victory.
Landon Patterson led Pittsburg in scoring with 18 points on three makes from the 3-point line. Whitmore scored 12 and Johnson had 10.
For the Panthers, the lead was given away and taken back by missed and made shots.
“We always play hard, it’s just a case of, when that ball didn’t go through the net it makes everything tougher,” coach Wes Wood said. “And then we got a little apprehensive because we missed a couple.”
In a fourth quarter in which it scored 25 points, everything seemed to go right for Pittsburg. Mistakes made earlier in the game were erased and the Panthers were doing all the little things they needed to do to take the win.
It also helped they were able to draw fouls. Pittsburg went 8-for-18 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
“On a night when we don’t shoot well, which happens every once in a while, we’ve got to hit the boards better and we actually did that in the fourth quarter and got some easy buckets, drew some fouls,” Wood said. “And we got a couple of their starters to foul out, which always makes a difference.”
Pittsburg has now won seven of its last eight games, the only loss coming to undefeated No. 1 ranked Stuart in the Pitt 8 tournament. With the district tournament just a week away, the Panthers are playing well at the right time.
“They all look at me like I’m crazy but I tell them in the locker room all the time, we’ve got however many games there are, but I call them scrimmages because the season, to me, doesn’t start until next Friday when the playoffs start,” Wood said. “And I think it (the win over Paden) keeps our momentum going for that more than anything.”
Pittsburg plays again 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Soper.
