CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales on Tuesday turned his NFL mandatory minicamp opening press conference into a public service announcement: stay up to date on cancer screenings.

Canales took the podium with a bandage on his nose, the result of Friday's medical procedure to remove a basal cell carcinoma. Before rehashing the happenings on the practice fields near Bank of America Stadium, Canales took a moment to remind Panthers fans to stay on top of their checkups.

"So this is my opportunity to say go get screened," Canales said. "This is something that can be caught and detected early; they took care of it and took care of me, so I'm really appreciative."

The Panthers' staff underwent an examination last month. With his family's medical history, Canales said he appreciated the opportunity to undergo a checkup.

"My mom had the same thing when she was in her 40s," Canales said. "So I've been very religious about my sunscreen and 50 to 70 (SPF) nose, ears, and neck, but you can imagine a Southern California kid playing outdoor sports and then getting into coaching.

"It's just a good reminder, right? Just making sure we don't take these things for granted."
