You can never have too many good edge rushers in the modern NFL. However, the Carolina Panthers were pretty far from deep at this position group going into training camp, then they suffered a huge blow on Thursday—already losing second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton for the season to an ACL tear.
Losing Scourton is the equivalent of getting a hole punctured in the hull of your ship on defense, and the Panthers were already missing multiple pieces up front before the injury.
Carolina did make one move at this spot this morning, signing Cam Gill—who spent the 2024 campaign with the team. Gill is fresh off a standout campaign from the spring, where he was named the United Football League's Defensive Player of the Year after posting a total of 11.0 sacks.
Let's project where he fits into the new-look depth chart on the edge with Scourton no longer in the picture . . .

The Panthers would be helped a great deal if Umanmielen takes a big second-year leap and forces his way into the starting lineup opposite Phillips. Jones had a solid 2024 season in Minnesota, posting 7.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits—but otherwise, his production in the NFL has been underwhelming.
Realistically, Carolina's front office is going to have to seek outside help to boost their depth at this group. At the moment, Joey Bosa and Leonard Floyd are likely their best options in free agency.
