The WNBA officiating has led to a lot of controversy this season, as the officials have largely cracked down and become a bit more strict across the board, leading to more foul calls than in previous seasons. This weekend, the officiating was once again front and center as Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers was called for a rather perplexing techincal foul.

During the third quarter of Friday night’s game against the Atlanta Dream, Bueckers drove into the lane, where she was quickly fouled. However, after the play was whistled dead, Bueckers emphatically clapped. Apparently, that was enough to merit a technical foul.

Needless to say, Buekcers was not happy about the call, and she was not shy about voicing her disagreement to the official.

“Are you serious? I clapped, just like that,” Bueckers could be seen telling the referee.

Bueckers was not made available to the media after the game, and Wings head coach Jose Fernandez chose not to address the call during his postgame press conference.

“I’m not gonna comment on that because I don’t wanna get fined,” Fernandez said.

Fans Not Happy

While Fernandez might not have wanted to discuss the call, fans quickly flooded to social media to express their outrage.

“This is so soft Paige did nothing??” one fan wrote in a post on X.

“Should be the last game this bozo ever works,” another fan wrote in a post.

“He needs to get fined or something,” someone else added.

“Call so bogus even the opposing team’s crowd is booing,” another person commented.

“The league is turning into a joke, where have we ever seen someone get a foul for giving a silly little clap like that,” someone else wrote.

“This might be the worst technical I’ve ever seen called – I’m lost!” another fan added.

Needless to say, this was a profoundly unpopular call from the official.
