Boring may not be the right word to describe the San Diego Padres' trade deadline.

But that's how The Athletic's Grant Brisbee described it on Monday.

They kept their dominant closer, Mason Miller, and flamethrower Adrian Morejon. Sometimes, the moves a Major League team doesn't make are the ones that make them better.

The NL West club had a few holes in its rotation, and the front office added two solid arms without blowing up the farm system, which is not highly rated.

The Padres acquired former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants, and right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers.

Both starters will be viable options in the postseason if the Padres clinch a Wild Card berth.

A.J. Preller made two solid moves at the deadline​

"It wasn’t A.J. Preller’s flashiest deadline, but it didn’t need to be. He traded prospects away for players who might be good when he’s either the architect of a pennant-winning Padres team or with another organization, but he didn’t gut the organization (more), either," Brisbee wrote.

"It was the middle bowl of porridge for a guy who usually pours the hot bowl on his head and the cold bowl down his trousers. Sometimes boring is OK," he added.

Preller, San Diego's president of baseball operations, didn't need to make a big splash to improve the roster.

But Ray and Mize are quality additions to what was an otherwise underwhelming rotation.
