The San Diego Padres are hot on the tail of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, as they only sit two games behind first place with a record of 12-6. However, their hold on second place is also in question, as the Arizona Diamondbacks are only 1.5 games behind them.

If the Padres want to keep second and hopefully take first, they’ll need a blockbuster trade that puts them over the top. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter proposes that San Diego’s move be dealing for New York Mets ace Freddy Peralta, and emptying the farm to do it.

The trade would look like this:

Padres get: RHP Freddy Peralta

Giants get: SD No. 2 prospect C Ethan Salas, SD No. 5 prospect OF Ryan Wideman, SD No. 11 prospect RHP Tucker Musgrove

“The idea of the Mets flipping Freddy Peralta just months after acquiring him in a blockbuster deal with the Brewers might seem outlandish, but it's the reality of the situation for an upcoming free agent with blockbuster value…The Padres look like a contender in clear need of rotation help, especially now that Nick Pivetta is dealing with elbow inflammation. Team president AJ Preller has never been shy about cashing in prospect trade chips, and now might be the time to turn the page on Ethan Salas,” Reuter wrote.

Peralta had a rocky start to the season, but has gotten under control. He’s posted a 1-1 record, a 3.86 ERA, 25 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.143 over 21 innings pitched.

The Padres would be shelling out prospects for a rental, but he’d be cheap, as he’s only set to make $8 million this season. The question is if they want to re-sign him, will they pay his market value of five-years, $131 million or more? Who knows.

Hopefully, the Padres can find a way to get Peralta, and somehow afford to lock him down long-term.
