The San Diego Padres went back to their losing ways against the Atlanta Braves, dropping a 3-2 decision as their sputtering offense simply couldn’t hit enough.
JP Sears and Bryce Elder were the starters, and they spent the first three innings putting up zeroes. But San Diego scored first in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Manny Machado, which was his 20th of the year.
Sears typically doesn’t fare well the second time through the lineup, and that proved true in this one. Michael Harris II started the scoring by countering Machado’s solo homer with one of his own, and a catcher’s interference by Freddy Fermin allowed Mauricio Dubon to reach. He was doubled home by Joey Bart, which gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead.
The Brave padded their lead with another solo homer, this one from Ozzie Albies in the sixth off Wandy Peralta to make it 3-1. But Ty France continued his recent homer binge with a solo homer in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2.
Atlanta starter Bryce Elder pitched a strong game, allowing just those two runs to go with five hits and a walk. Sears also allowed two runs in his five innings, with one of them unearned due to the catcher’s’ interference.
The Padres were shut down by Atlanta relievers Danny Young and Victor Mederos after Elder left, and Mederos was allowed to pitch the ninth with Raisel Iglesias unavailable due to his recent workload. Mederos did give up a single to Luis Rengifo, but he was otherwise able to corral the Padres and get his first career save.
The Padres had a quiet night offensively other than Machado and France, as only Fermin was able to manage a single as their bats went back to sleep after their 19-run barrage against the Royals yesterday in Kansas City.
This loss was merely more of the same, and the Padres have now lost three of their last four games. Sears pitched well enough to win had he gotten enough support, but at least he was able to give the Padres five good innings.
Their crucial road trip is starting to look increasingly grim as the Padres dropped back under .500 at 49-51. The lure of the wild card still beckons if San Diego can get it together, and the Padres will send Walker Buehler and his 5.36 ERA to the mound tomorrow night against Reynaldo Lopez for Atlanta.
