The San Diego Padres came into its series against the St. Louis Cardinals having won back-to-back against the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles but dropped the opener of the three-game set 3-0 after a brilliant pitching performance.

St. Louis’ Dustin May was stellar Monday night, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine in a complete game shutout, requiring just 101 pitches to get the job done. The lone Padres hit came off the bat of third baseman Manny Machado in the seventh inning.

Second baseman Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a walk two at-bats prior to Machado’s single, which put runners on the corners with one out, but the normally clutch utilityman Gavin Sheets wrapped into an inning-ending double play to kill the scoring threat.

The Padres used an opener for right-hander Lucas Giolito, who once again struggled with command. Giolito went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while punching out two. Giolito has less strikeouts than walks issued this season and that usually results in trouble.

Offensively, the Padres have been a mess. San Diego has the worst team batting average (.217) by far, on-base percentage (.291), slugging percentage (.361) and OPS (.652). Although Tatis has been much better recently, the Padres’ other stars haven’t picked up their slack.

San Diego needs a lot more from its lineup, or it won’t make it very far this season. The offense will get the chance to bounce back Tuesday against Cardinals right-hander Adrian Pallante, who has had a solid season thus far, while the Padres send ace righty Michael King to the bump.

Pallante is 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 56 strikeouts to 25 walks through 13 starts (69.2 innings). The 27-year-old has pitched into the sixth inning in five of his last seven starts and he last worked against the New York Mets when he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning five over six innings of work.

King has been scuffling lately, taking three consecutive losses before tossing 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds. The 31-year-old is 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 72 strikeouts to 32 walks through 14 starts (80.2 innings).

Against the Cardinals on May 7, King threw six one-run innings on one hit (Alec Burleson home run) and two walks while fanning six.

The winner of this series decides the season series, as the two teams split a four-game set last month.

First pitch is at 4:45 p.m. PDT on TBS, MLB.TV and regional sports networks.
