LAS VEGAS – Paddy Pimblett did not take any joy in watching Conor McGregor fall apart in his return to the octagon.

McGregor had the misfortune of getting injured seconds into his rematch with Max Holloway in the UFC 329 main event Saturday. He injured his right knee with the first kick he threw and fell a couple of times before the referee stopped the fight due to his inability to continue fighting. The bout only lasted 69 seconds.

Pimblett (24-4 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who fought and submitted Benoit Saint Denis (17-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) a fight prior in the co-main event, said he felt bad seeing the Irishman go out with an injury after being five years away from the octagon – following a different injury in a fight.

"It was sad to see," Pimblett said at the UFC 329 post-fight press conference. "That's the thing with this sport: You've got to stay consistent. You've got to keep fighting, and I think where he hasn't fought in so long, his body couldn't keep up with it. Coming out and throwing a crazy kick like that first thing, his knee just collapsed underneath him, and I feel bad for him. He's put so much into coming back and getting back in the octagon, and that happens in the first five seconds. You've got to feel for him."

Saturday marked McGregor's comeback from a nasty 2021 leg break in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier. "The Notorious" hasn't won a bout since he stopped Donald Cerrone in 2020, and is now 1-4 in his last five outings. Although some have questioned if McGregor entered UFC 329 injured, the Irishman said he was 100 percent healthy and that the injury came in that initial sequence.
