GREEN BAY − With days before the start of free agency, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is taking a creative approach to his roster.

The Packers traded defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts for linebacker Zaire Franklin, according to multiple reports. Wooden was the Packers’ best run defender on their defensive line last season. His departure brings a linebacker who could replace Quay Walker, who is scheduled to depart in free agency.

The player-for-player trade is likely the first step in a multiple-faceted plan to rearrange the Packers’ defensive front. Gutekunst will need to replace Wooden’s production in the run game, but it’s expected to be a deep class of nose tackles in this spring’s draft. Securing a linebacker could help limit the need to draft the position early, allowing the Packers to concentrate on their more pressing need on the defensive line.

This story will be updated.
