GREEN BAY − Matt LaFleur couldn't hire Jeff Hafley again to be his defensive coordinator. He sure did target similar qualities in his pursuit.
The Green Bay Packers coach reportedly is hiring Jonathan Gannon to coordinate his defense, providing a safe place to land after the Arizona Cardinals fired him Jan. 5. Gannon interviewed twice for the job this week, positioning himself as a favorite for the position. Instead of waiting through the weekend to make the hire, which might have given LaFleur a chance to speak with Denver Broncos defensive passing game coordinator and former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, the Packers closed the position swiftly.
Gannon was 15-36 in three seasons as the Cardinals head coach. One of his losses came last October when the Packers beat the Cardinals 27-23 in Arizona, thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback. Before getting his shot at being an NFL head coach, Gannon was the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator for two seasons, including their Super Bowl run in 2022. Gannon rose through the coaching ranks as a defensive backs coach, working with the Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings before arriving in Philadelphia.
If all that sounds familiar, consider Hafley had a sub-.500 record of 22-26 in four seasons as Boston College's head coach before LaFleur hired him to lead his defense. Before that, Hafley was a defensive backs coach in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns, bringing a similar back-to-front perspective of the Packers defense Gannon will have.
