The Green Bay Packers have another developmental quarterback option on the roster entering the 2026 offseason. On Tuesday, the team announced the signing of quarterback Kyle McCord, a sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles from the 2025 draft.

McCord (6-3, 218) spent the entire 2025 season on the Eagles' practice squad. He turns 24 years old in September.

The Packers ended the season with Malik Willis and Desmond Ridder behind Jordan Love on the 53-man roster, but Willis (unrestricted) and Ridder (restricted) will both be free agents when their contracts expire in March.

McCord, a five-star recruit, spent his collegiate career at Ohio State and Syracuse. While with the Buckeyes, McCord backed up C.J. Stroud during the 2021 and 2022 seasons before becoming the starter in 2023, when he led Ohio State to an 11-1 regular season record while throwing 24 touchdown passes and six interceptions. After transferring to Syracuse for the 2024 season, McCord threw for 4,779 yards -- a Syracuse and ACC record -- and 34 touchdown passes. He finished 10th in Heisman Trophy voting.

McCord was the seventh of 13 quarterbacks selected in the 2025 draft.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compared McCord to Mitchell Trubisky.

Pocket passer with good size who played in a high-volume, pro-passing scheme that should give him a head start as a pro. McCord was too inconsistent at Ohio State, relative to the talent around him, but he proved to be confident and productive last season at Syracuse without that same level of supporting talent. His fundamentals are usually solid and he plays with adequate poise in the face of pressure. He has enough arm to make window throws and push the ball around the field. McCord seeks to attack coverages vertically instead of operating as a “Checkdown Charlie.” While he can hit chunk throws, his decision-making and ball placement aren’t always good fits for his gunslinger mentality. His mobility inside and outside the pocket is average. McCord has good size, adequate talent and commendable resilience. He could find a home as a backup quarterback with modest upside.

Over three preseason games with the Eagles in August, McCord completed 24 of 56 passes (42.9 percent) for 191 yards (3.4 yards per attempt), one touchdown pass and two interceptions. Per PFF, McCord had zero big time throws and four turnover worthy plays. His passer rating was 43.1.

Barring a massive leap in development this offseason, McCord is unlikely to be the full-time backup behind Love in 2026. However, he could have a chance to develop behind a more established backup (possibly Ridder, if retained) as the No. 3 quarterback in Green Bay, likely on the practice squad again. A draft pick at quarterback is also possible come April.
