GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers have restructured safety Xavier McKinney’s contract as part of their effort to create salary-cap room for the upcoming start of free agency.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Packers have created $9 million or more in cap room by turning McKinney’s $8.5 million roster bonus and much of his $4.25 million base salary into a signing bonus.
For cap purposes, the signing bonus is then prorated over the length of the contract. Fowler reported that McKinney’s 2026 cap hit drops from $19.088 million to just under $10 million.
The Packers have to be under the cap by the start of the league year March 11, which is when teams can begin signing free agents as well.
Based on NFLPA data, the move should put the Packers about $4 million under the cap, though they will need a lot more room to be active in free agency, re-sign some of their own free agents, and account for their draft class contracts as well as other built-in costs that are not yet on their cap.
They also can clear about $19.5 million in cap room by cutting center Elgton Jenkins and about $11 million by cutting defensive end Rashan Gary.
The Packers are also likely to restructure other contracts to create cap room. Chances are they won’t leverage their cap to the maximum, but among the possibilities for cap-clearing restructures are:
