GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers are reportedly hiring Vanderbilt assistant coach Will Smart to the defensive staff, according to several college football sites including FootballScoop and On3.
The report didn’t state what Smart’s role will be on Jonathan Gannon’s staff, but it’s likely as a quality control coach or assistant positional coach. Previous quality control coach Wendel Davisreportedly left Green Bay to join Jeff Hafley in Miami, and it’s also possible assistant defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase, who worked with Hafley at Boston College, could leave as well.
Smart, who played on the defensive line at Wake Forest from 2019-21, was a graduate assistant for his alma mater before becoming Vanderbilt’s pass rush specialist coach for the 2025 season. The Commodores had historic success reaching 10 wins for the first time in school history. Vanderbilt had 31 sacks on the season.
The Packers have reportedly added to Gannon's staff former Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich, former 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks and former Virginia Tech defensive coordinator and Wisconsin native Sam Siefkes to coach linebackers. DeMarcus Covington is still on staff as defensive line coach and run-game coordinator.
It also was reported that Packers assistant special teams coach Byron Storer will be the new special teams coach for the Cleveland Browns, according to multiple reports.
Storer has worked as an assistant with Rich Bisaccia since 2018, dating to their time with the Las Vegas Raiders and then joining the Packers in 2022.
