The Green Bay Packers are releasing cornerback Nate Hobbs just one year after making him a prized free agent acquisition. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers will release Hobbs with a post-June 1st designation.
Releasing Hobbs now saves the Packers from paying his $6.5 million roster bonus. Designating him as a post-June 1st cut allows the Packers to save almost $9 million on the salary cap in 2026, but the savings won't hit the team's cap until after June 1st.
Hobbs signed a four-year, $48 million deal with the Packers last March. The deal included a $16 million signing bonus. The Packers will end up paying Hobbs a little over $18 million for only 358 underwhelming snaps during the 2025 season.
Hobbs dealt with three different knee injuries during his lone season in Green Bay, including one requiring surgery early in training camp and another sending him to season-ending injured reserve. Hobbs ended up playing in only 11 games.
The Packers thought Hobbs could play on the perimeter and in the slot, but his play on the perimeter was shaky, and Javon Bullard took over full-time slot duties in 2025.
The makeover at cornerback has begun. Earlier on Tuesday, the Packers agreed to sign cornerback Benjamin St-Juste to a two-year, $10 million deal.
