The Green Bay Packers are evaluating the severity of a neck injury suffered this offseason by tight end Luke Musgrave, who started training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and has an uncertain timeline for returning to the field.
In fact, general manager Brian Gutekunst said the team still hasn't ruled out the possibility of the "unexpected" injury being a long-term one.
"We're working through it to see if it's something long term or not," Gutekunst said. "You know, around here, with heads, necks and hearts, it's a little bit more sensitive than some of the other injuries. You have to take it a little slower and make sure what you know is what you know. This is a neck injury, so we'll take our time and make sure we know what we know before we put him at any kind of risk."
Coach Matt LaFleur said Musgrave's injury dates back to mandatory minicamp in June.
The Packers are dealing with the absence of both Musgrave, who caught 24 passes over 17 games last season, and Tucker Kraft at tight end to start training camp, although Kraft is expecting to come off the PUP list "very soon" as he nears the end of his multi-month recovery from ACL surgery.
Behind Kraft and Musgrave at tight end, the Packers have Josh Whyle, Drake Dabney, Messiah Swinson, Luke Lachey, rookie RJ Maryland and Thomas Yassmin, the team's International Player Pathway player. It's a group lacking experience and production at the NFL level.
Gutekunst acknowledged the team is dealing with a depth issue at tight end to start camp and will eventually evaluate if another addition is required.
"There is a concern there from a depth perspective, because we don't have a lot of guys who have played a lot of football there," Gutekunst said. "We'll see, as training camp transpires, if we do something there or not."
Kraft, once he returns to practice, will assume most of the heavy lifting at tight end. With Musgrave's injury situation now a legitimate concern, it's fair to wonder who will be working alongside Kraft at the position come the start of the 2026 season.
