The Packers are leaving no stone unturned aiming to upgrade at edge rusher.


Facing Micah Parsons still working his way back from a torn ACL, and uncertainty surrounding just how much upside Lukas Van Ness still has or what Dani Dennis-Sutton’s potential is as a rookie, new Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon appears to be getting creative during Green Bay’s OTA practices.

According to a report from PackersWire analyst Mark Oldacres, the Packers seem to be contemplating moving emerging star linebacker Edgerrin Cooper to the edge, during these early practices.

“On defense, the headlines begin with Edgerrin Cooper lining up as an edge rusher,” Oldacres writes. “To start team drills in a 5-man front, opposite Lukas Van Ness as the two outside linebackers. Rookie Chris McClellan started at nose tackle, with Chris Brooks and Javon Hargrave as the 3-4 defensive ends.

“The other starters were Zaire Franklin at linebacker, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine and Javon Bullard at cornerback, and Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams at safety.”

Franklin’s arrival as a stalwart veteran seemed to telegraph the chance for Cooper, who garnered All-Pro votes as a rookie in 2024, to freelance and get after the quarterback or ball carrier with more ease.


However, as the Packers search for a reliable secondary option opposite Parsons and a stopgap if his return is delayed early in the season, Cooper could find himself getting after the quarterback far more often as a traditional pass rusher.
