The Pacers extended a two-way contract qualifying offer to forward Jalen Slawson, a league source told IndyStar on Monday, meaning Slawson will be a restricted free agent when the NBA calendar turns over on Tuesday and the Pacers will have the opportunity to match offers from any other team to keep him in the fold.
Slawson played most of last season on the Noblesville Boom with an Exhibit 10 contract. He spent training camp with the Pacers but was waived, as expected, before the opener. However, he was successful enough with the Boom to earn a standard deal.
The 6-7, 215-pound Slawson averaged 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game with the Boom in 37 games and earned a G League first-team All-Defense spot. In 13 NBA games with the Pacers, he averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
At the moment, the Pacers appear to have three players vying for two two-way contracts. Purdue point guard Braden Smith, taken by the Pacers with the 38th overall pick in the second round of the NBA Draft last week, is expected to take one of the three. Slawson and guards Ethan Thompson and Taelon Peter, who ended last season on two-way deals, are expected to fight for the other two.
