The Chicago Bears welcomed eight new rookies to the roster during the 2025 NFL draft, which included a pair of playmakers in tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III with their first two selections.
Chicago also shored up the trenches with the second-round selections of offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo and defensive tackle Shemar Turner. The Bears also found some potential late-round gems with linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II, cornerback Zah Frazier, guard Luke Newman and running back Kyle Monangai on Day 3.
Over the next few days, our Bears Wire staff will be sharing their thoughts about the 2025 rookie class. First up: Our favorite draft pick, where there's one overwhelming winner and another player worth the title.
As a Michigan fan, I’ve watched Colston Loveland dominate for three seasons and just knew he was going to be special at the next level. He’s an elite athlete, a great route runner and the best receiving tight end in this draft. This selection was all Ben Johnson, and it’s hard not to get excited when the Bears head coach is envisioning a Sam LaPorta role for Loveland. The fact that Loveland was able to thrive last season at Michigan when they didn’t have an adequate quarterback on the roster is nothing short of remarkable. Now, Loveland gets to catch passes from Caleb Williams and play in a Ben Johnson offense. Talk about a massive upgrade in situations.
By the time the Bears were picking at No. 10, the top running back and three tackles had already been selected, so picking for need didn’t make all that much sense. I love that they went with upside and brought a dynamic weapon into the fold with Colston Loveland, and he has plenty of it. If anyone knows tight ends, it’s Ben Johnson. He has gotten the most out of the position for much of his career and was a key reason why the Detroit Lions drafted Sam LaPorta. Loveland is a smooth route runner and has excellent hands. You don’t normally see tight ends coming into the league who are as polished as him. He’s going to be a mismatch nightmare when paired with Cole Kmet. I’m excited to see how he integrates into this offense, and it feels like the Bears will have their next great tight end for years to come. Their other first-round picks at the position (Mike Ditka and Greg Olsen) turned out to be pretty good, too.
The reason why Luther Burden is my favorite pick is because 31 other teams passed on this first round talent. The biggest thing about the Burden selection is he will now come into the league with a chip on his shoulder, and he’s coming to a team with plenty of potential on offense and a coaching staff that’ll get the most out of everyone on the roster. Everyone was pounding the table for a running back, myself included. However, the selection of Burden coming after Loveland has me incredibly excited for the future of Caleb Williams and this Bears offense under Ben Johnson, a plethora of weapons are available.
Of every pick that the Chicago Bears made, Colston Loveland has the highest ceiling. Debates can be had about the necessity of a tight end in the first round but the player they got is very good. If Caleb Williams becomes a star, Loveland will be one of the many beneficiaries.
