Oubre and his 9-year-old son, Kelly Jr., fled New Orleans just before Katrina struck, packing everything they could into a Toyota Sequoia and leaving without knowing where they would end up. With no home to return to after Katrina, the father decided to stay near Houston, believing the city’s basketball scene would be best for his son’s development. Kelly Jr. became a star at George Bush High School near Houston before finishing at Findlay Prep in Nevada and playing one season at Kansas—and his NBA career has since spanned six teams.
