NORMAN — Playing without Patty Gasso, second-ranked OU softball didn’t miss much of a beat, beating St. Thomas 12-4 in five innings Thursday at Love’s Field.
The Sooners scored eight in the second and added four more in the fourth, finishing with four home runs — two from Cydney Sanders and one each from Sydney Barker and Corri Hicks.
OU improved to 33-3 with the victory.
Here are three quick takeaways from the Sooners’ win:
The game was originally scheduled to be played as part of a Friday doubleheader, but inclement weather caused the game against St. Thomas to be moved up a day.
But Sooners’ coach Patty Gasso had a previous commitment, as the keynote speaker at the Oklahoma Christian University Associates Gala.
Instead of missing the speaking engagement, which had long been scheduled, Gasso trusted the team to hitting coach — and eldest son — JT Gasso.
JT Gasso coached third base, often staying close enough to the Sooners’ dugout to communicate with players on deck and in the dugout.
Cydney Sanders got the scoring going with a 207-foot solo home run to right to lead off the second.
That opened the floodgates, as OU ultimately sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight in the inning.
After Sanders’ first home run, the Sooners scored another on an error, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas delivered a two-run single, Gabbie Garcia added an RBI double and Sanders capped the scoring with a 228-foot home run just over the outstretched glove of centerfielder Avery Wukawitz.
Sanders was the first Sooners’ hitter to record two home runs in one inning since Alynah Torres against UT Arlington last season.
Torres’ feat also happened in the second inning.
The Sooners and Tommies were initially scheduled to play as part of an OU doubleheader Friday, but expected inclement weather moved the game up a day.
OU will take on UCF at 7 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
St. Thomas and UCF will play at 10 a.m. Saturday.
