After a lengthy process in the transfer portal, one of the Oregon Ducks' top freshmen from last season has found a new home.
Outfielder Angel Laya announced his commitment to LSU on Friday, leaving Eugene for an SEC power as expected. However, the news comes not long after Oregon hitting coach Jack Marder left the Ducks for a job at Texas, which was also recruiting Laya.
Laya opted to join up with the Tigers over a reunion with Marder in Austin. Despite missing the NCAA Tournament last season, LSU is a consistent force to be reckoned with, and the Tigers have already put together a great transfer portal class to reload for 2027.
As for the Ducks, Laya's entrance into the portal came as a major surprise and set a chain of transfers in motion, including Naulivou Lauaki Jr. and Burke-Lee Mabeus both leaving the program for SEC teams, spelling a bigger problem for Oregon baseball as a program.
Laya was a Freshman All-American in his lone season at Oregon. He finished the season slashing .296/.396/.538 with a .934 OPS and 47 RBIs. He set Oregon freshman records with 14 home runs, 49 runs scored and 120 total bases. Laya also showed rare patience at the plate for a young slugger, drawing 27 walks and 10 hit-by-pitches while striking out 34 times.
Oregon has been ransacked through the transfer portal, losing some of the program's top talents. Laya was one of the best players available in the portal. The Ducks have made some savvy additions as well, and Mark Wasikowski is likely not done making some necessary adjustments to the team heading into next season.
