Thanks to a 10-0 start and a 22-12 overall record, the Oregon Ducks women's basketball squad was named to the NCAA tournament on Sunday. They were tabbed as the No. 8 seed in the Fort Worth region and will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday, March 20, at 10:30 a.m. PST at the Moody Center in Austin, TX.
The Ducks' season came to a close just over a week ago in the Big Ten tournament, as they fell to the Michigan Wolverines, 80-58, in the quarterfinals. In that contest, leading scorer Katie Fiso totaled 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and was aided by 16 points from Ehis Etute. However, no other Duck scored more than seven points and they turned the ball over 17 times versus just nine from Michigan.
Oregon went just 8-10 in the Big Ten, though they added two victories and a loss in the Big Ten tournament to bolster their resume prior to Selection Sunday.
The Hokies will enter their meeting with the Ducks sporting a 23-9 record and 12-6 in the ACC. They were also defeated in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament. Guard Carleigh Wentzel (15.3 points) and forward Carys Baker (14.1 points) lead Virginia Tech as the only scorers in double figures, with guard Mackenzie Nelson leading the team with 5.7 assists per game.
The Ducks are an early favorite to take down the Hokies according to ESPN BET, being favored by 3.5 points.
The winner of Oregon-Virginia Tech will likely face off against the top-seeded Texas Longhorns, who will compete against a 16-seeded first four opponent. The Longhorns will have the upper hand, considering the game will be played on their home court — but to have the opportunity for the upset, the Ducks will first have to get through the Hokies on Friday.
