Women’s Team
Returners: Virginia Crocker, Patsy Daughters, Hinata Furutani, Tilde Jagare, Juliet Santitto, Bridget Mihulka
Newcomers: Montserrat Marrón Baruqui (freshman)
Departures: Olivia Symons (graduated)
The women’s team improved their record slightly from their first season in the Big Ten going 12-13 overall and ranked #72 by the ITA. The squad struggled on the road with a combined record of 3-8 away from Eugene and missed out on the Big Ten Tournament with a 3-10 conference record. While the additional travel as a Big Ten team needing to go between multiple Midwest locations on a given weekend was bound to be a challenge, it’s difficult not to see results so far in the new league as disappointing. Leaving the former Pac-12 that included heavyweights such as Cal, Stanford, Arizona, and Arizona State behind hasn’t seen any notable uptick in win totals.
With that said, this was very young team last year with Jagare and Symons the only upperclassmen. There have been no defections via the transfer portal, so Jagare (2nd team All-Big Ten last season) will be set to step into Symons role as veteran leader of what should be a tight knit group. All the other returning starters will have at least one full year of competition under their belts. Well regarded recruits Hadley Appling (part of the same class as Crockers and Furutani) and Marrón Baruqui provide depth and may challenge some of the veterans for playing time. Rounding out the squad is rising junior Avery Jennings, a veteran who didn’t compete in the spring season.
There is a lot of potential for improvement with this team as some of their best players enter their prime college years. While Oregon is not a program that necessarily expects to go toe-to-toe with heavyweights like USC, UCLA, or Ohio State the goal should be securing a winning season by turning close losses to the likes of Illinois, Maryland, and Northwestern into tight wins.
Men’s Team
Returners: Cameron Burton, Declan Galligan, Daniel Hughes, Sam Olszakowski, Will Semler
Newcomers: Alexis Berquier, Kohshi Ishibashi
Departures: (all by graduation/eligibility) Vlad Breazu, Matthew Burton, Pierre Mouesca, Lachlan Robertson, Russell Soohoo
In last year’s preview I was concerned about the men’s team due to attrition from the transfer portal. The senior heavy group provided a pleasant surprise: 14-11 overall and 5-8 in Big Ten Play. Finishing 8th in the conference the Ducks made it to the big ten tournament but were swept by Indiana in the first round, ending the season at #58 in the ITA rankings.
Frustratingly, unlike the women’s team, the available information about this roster (or even the roster itself) appears incomplete. I found no reports of outgoing or incoming transfers, and those players I listed as departures were listed as Seniors both on team website and the ITA’s web page.
Assuming I’m not mistaken about the eligibility of the former seniors only C. Burton, Declan Galligan, and Sam Olszakowski had significant time on the court during the Spring season and are set to return. Not simply the most experienced, but the most highly rated players on last year’s team were all in their final season of eligibility. It had appeared to me a year ago like the coaching staff was going to tear this team down to the studs and rebuild it entirely.
The team would only have seven players available if no other recruits and/or transfers arrive in time for the new academic year. AtQ will update our readers, at the latest, when (individual and pair) competition resumes in the Fall. It looks to be a season of major transition, and I wouldn’t be shocked if we see a step back in the win column next Spring as a result.
