The Oregon Ducks will wrap up the first Big Ten series of the season against Indiana, hoping to take home the sweep of the three-game series.
The Ducks took the series opener thanks to Will Sanford’s career-high 10 strikeouts and a late rally sparked by Maddox Molony’s towering 436-foot home run. Ryan Cooney’s sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Ducks a 3-2 lead that they held on to for the win.
Game two was a much smoother performance for Oregon. Right-hander Collin Clarke followed up the first complete game of his career with another strong seven innings and seven strikeouts, allowing only one run. The bats came alive as Cooney, Drew Smith and Angel Laya all homered en route to a 5-1 victory.
This is the first-ever series between the Hoosiers and Ducks as conference foes. While the Ducks (16-3, 4-1 Big Ten) have been flying high to start the season, the Hoosiers could use a big road victory to lift their spirits (7-11, 1-4 Big Ten).
Oregon skipper Mark Wasikowski will put right-hander Cal Scolari (3-0, 2.37 ERA) on the hill to close out the series. The San Diego transfer had a turbulent outing last weekend against Purdue, surrendering four runs over five innings, but he still managed to find eight strikeouts in a win.
Meanwhile, the Hoosiers will roll with left-hander Brayton Thomas (1-1, 3.12 ERA). Thomas couldn’t make it through the fifth inning last weekend against Washington, allowing three runs and winding up with his first loss of the season.
