SUNY Orange men's basketball has turned to one of its greatest players to join the coaching staff for the 2026-27 season.

Romeo Aquino, the 2022 national player of the year, has joined the coaching staff of Tom Rickard as an assistant coach. Aquino, a Washingtonville High School graduate from the Town of Newburgh, averaged nearly 24 points during that 31-3 season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association Div. II player of the year and first-team All-American honors (he was a second-team choice as a freshman).

Following his career at Orange, Aquino played one season at Bluefield State, averaging 13.6 points and five rebounds, and his final season at Fayetteville State, averaging 13 points and six rebounds.

Aquino joints a talented staff that includes Jamaal Ennis, Kevin Stein and Tony Cuffee.

Last season, the Colts posted a 25-10 overall mark, 5-1 record in the Mid-Hudson Conference and 11-2 mark in Region XV. Orange won the region tournament, the NJCAA East Region A title and qualified for nationals - the Colts posted a 2-2 mark in Illinois. Orange loses five sophomores and may return seven freshmen.
