When JJ Redick was hired to be the Los Angeles Lakers' head coach last June, he vowed to bring a new emphasis on attention to detail, analytics and organization. Part of them meant less "random basketball," meaning freelance offense early in the shot clock when a team has nothing in transition.
However, as this season has progressed, the Lakers have seemingly devolved into more one and two-man basketball with meager movement off the ball. That was especially true when the Lakers lost Game 1 of their first-round playoff series to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday by a final score of 117-95.
They shot just 39.8% from the field and had a paltry 15 assists, but one other stat is troubling. According to analytics guru Cranjis McBasketball, the Lakers had a very low organized offensive rate, which means they were going to iso basketball way too often.
The team's efficiency while freelancing versus running sets was also clear.
Luka Doncic overcame the aggressive, in-your-face defense that Minnesota applied and scored 37 points, with 16 of them coming in the first quarter, on 12-of-22 overall shooting and 5-of-10 from 3-point range. But LeBron James only had 19 points and Austin Reaves scored just 16 points.
Even worse, L.A.'s bench mustered just 13 points, which may be symptomatic of the team's lack of ball and player movement. At its best, the team has moved the basketball around quickly to generate good looks, especially from 3-point range. But only Doncic and perhaps forward Rui Hachimura shot well from long distance, and now the Purple and Gold face a pressure-packed Game 2 on Tuesday.

LA's under 25% OOR for what I have logged so far, which would be the worst game on the entire season.

The team's efficiency while freelancing versus running sets was also clear.
1.07 ePPP Organized (& 1.26 with good coverage fit)
0.86 ePPP Freelancing
A difference of 0.21 expected points per possession.
LA ran sets on just 43% of their half court possessions and went 0/1 on post/iso help counters.
