The Las Vegas Raiders are still sorting through the process of hiring a new head coach. More than a dozen candidates were initially identified, though a few of them have already taken jobs elsewhere. As the Raiders advance to the in-person portion of the interview schedule, Mike McDaniel and Ejiro Evero are among those under serious consideration.
Whenever the Raiders hire a head coach, attention will quickly shift to assembling his coaching staff. The most important hire will be at the offensive coordinator position. The Raiders must be prepared to invest in the development of assumed franchise quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza essentially confirmed himself as Vegas' No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL draft during Monday's National Championship triumph.
One of the candidates who should emerge for the Raiders' offensive coordinator role is Indiana co-OC and quarterbacks coach Chandler Whitmer. Making Mendoza comfortable in his transition to the Raiders is of the utmost importance. Hiring Coach Whitmer would do that.
Whitmer possesses previous NFL experience. That's key to this whole scenario. It's not like the Raiders would be projecting Whitmer as an NFL coach. There's actual evidence that suggests he wouldn't be out of his element.
Whitmer held the title of "pass game specialist" for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. He worked under head coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. Whitmer is said to be extremely close with Mendoza.
Whitmer was also employed by the Los Angeles Chargers for three seasons (2021-23). Even if the Raiders see offensive coordinator as too big of a jump for Whitmer, perhaps a quarterbacks position coach role would also suit him well. It would help make Mendoza comfortable, which is the ultimate goal.
