After securing the best record in Major League Baseball in 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers made it to the National League Championship Series, only to be swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, the Brewers are sparring with the Dodgers again atop the baseball world, with Los Angeles possessing the best record, and Milwaukee only a half-game behind. If the Brewers want to overcome their kryptonite in not just the regular season, but the postseason as well, they are going to have to play even better.
Specifically, one player needs to give them even more.
Recently, The Athletic asked a select group of its local and national baseball writers to rank MLB’s teams from best to worst, and it compiled the results in a power ranking system. Additionally, it named each player who needs to be a star for their respective team in the second half of the season.
For the Brewers, it is Christian Yelich.
At 34 years old, Yelich is the veteran of a rather young team. With an MVP to his name and three All-Star selections, he is also the most decorated player on the Brewers’ roster. Therefore, he needs to take the lead when it matters most.
But in many ways, Yelich has been substandard this season. As The Athletic pointed out, he entered the All-Star break striking out more than he ever has. Currently, he has 83 strikeouts in 263 at-bats.
Yelich has also been a victim of injuries this season, but he has been healthy and available since May. In 67 games this season, Yelich has a .243 batting average, a .331 on-base percentage, a .388 slugging percentage and a .719 OPS.
All of those numbers are down from last season. Yelich is coming off a solid game in a win over the New York Mets, where he contributed a pair of RBIs, and Milwaukee is going to need that version of him more often.
If the Brewers want to capture their first title in franchise history, they will most likely have to go through the Dodgers first. Los Angeles has star power up and down its roster, a luxury Milwaukee cannot afford. Therefore, it needs its best players to be the best version of themselves and more.
Yelich may not be able to recapture the type of production that once made him the Most Valuable Player, but the Brewers undoubtedly need him to lead by example and play better if they are going to make their goals come to fruition.
