Omarion Hampton's offensive coordinator gives warning about 2026 usage

The UNC football program does a solid job of producing pro-level talent, with the 2026 NFL Draft a rare exception. Several Tar Heels signed with teams afterwards, most notably Marcus Allen with the Minnesota Vikings.

Omarion Hampton gave North Carolina another first-round selection, going 22nd overall to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. Hampton had a promising start to his rookie NFL season, highlighted by his first 100-yard game during the Chargers' Week 4, 21-18 loss at the New York Giants, but a fractured ankle forced him out of action for two months.

"There’s good news and bad news, fantasy owners," McDaniel told reporters during recent media availability. "Good news is, I see all three of those guys (Hampton, Kimani Vidal, Keaton Mitchell) producing at a very high level. The bad news is, I can’t tell you which games those are."I like to have backs be fresh, just because I think it's a competitive advantage against a defense who's not subbing out.

"I'm not very comfortable, when a guy I can tell is in the zone, to take him out," McDaniel continued. "So, you kinda play hot hand once you’re into games. Specifically, I’ll use all three of those guys probably every game. The relative ratio that will be based on opponent and what we're asking the guys to do."

Despite the ankle injury, Hampton still finished his rookie season with 737 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns, showcasing that same star power that turned heads during his three seasons in Chapel Hill. Hampton was First-Team All-ACC in both 2023 and 2024, helping UNC to a pair of bowl games, while finishing Top-4 in career rushing yards (3,565) and touchdowns (36).

Entering Year Two, Hampton remains part of a Chargers team expected to compete in a loaded AFC West. He's just starting his NFL legacy.
