Olympic time trial champion Remco Evenepoel wins Tour de France Stage 16

Stage 16 of the Tour de France tested the peloton with a 26.1-kilometer individual time trial, tracing a route from the lakeside town of Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains. As the first and only individual time trial of the 2026 edition, Remco Evenepoel, the reigning Olympic time trial champion, outpaced the world-class field to seize the stage victory.

The stage began with a climb challenge: an ascent up the Côte de Larringes, and after conquering this Category 2 climb, competitors had a brief plateau before launching into a fast, technical descent. The closing kilometers leveled out, providing an ideal runway for the time trial specialists to sprint to the finish line in Thonon-les-Bains.

Bruno Armirail set an early benchmark, blazing through the course in 34:14. His stint at the top was brief, as Mattia Cattaneo shaved 13 seconds off Armirail’s time, finishing in 34:01.

Ultimately, Evenepoel surged to the fastest time of the day with a 32:19, edging Tadej Pogačar, who finished with a time of 32:47
