Alpine skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin has revealed that she entered the past Olympic season with concerns about her mother, Eileen, who was diagnosed with a tumour during a routine check-up last year.
"We didn't really want to talk about your cancer and your treatments at the start of the season, but many people in the World Cup circuit noticed that you weren't there," Shiffrin said in a conversation with her mother on her podcast "What's the Point."
Due to her cancer diagnosis, Eileen Shiffrin missed her daughter's pre-season training and the start of the World Cup season - unlike in all previous years.
"Preparing for the Olympic season was vastly different. It was the first time you weren't there at the start of the racing season. You've taken care of me my whole life. And you really, really had to take care of yourself," Mikaela Shiffrin said.
She explained her mother's absence with a small lie: her mother had bought a house and was furnishing it.
"People seemed to have believed it. It was almost like hiding it, but you don't really want them to talk about it," she said.
Shiffrin finished the season with a slalom Olympic gold and her sixth overall World Cup title.
In the podcast, Eileen Shiffrin urged people to take preventive check-ups seriously.
"I cannot stress enough how important it is to get mammograms and colonoscopies," she said, but did not comment on her current state of health.
