Bode Miller is making headlines for reasons far removed from the ski slopes. According to court records obtained, the Olympic skiing legend has been charged with two misdemeanor counts in Idaho following an incident on June 6.
The charges include one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Court records show Miller posted a $5,000 cash bond and was later released.
The retired Olympian has pleaded not guilty to both charges through his attorney, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for July 29 as the case continues to move through the legal system, per TMZ.
Tragedy Struck The Olympian’s Family In 2018
Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, had an unspeakable tragedy long before their recent family update. Their 19-month-old daughter, Emmy, died after she fell into a neighbor’s pool in California in June 2018, according to BBC News.
Later, the former Olympic skier shared his heartbreak in an emotional statement saying he and his family were “beyond devastated” by the tragedy. Although she was frantically brought to the surface, Emmy was unable to be revived.
The loss sent shockwaves through the sporting world and remains one of the most painful chapters in the Miller family’s journey, a grief they have continued to carry in the years since.
Bode Miller Broke Down Recalling The Loss Of His Daughter
Away from the competition, Miller has experienced a loss beyond any medal could prepare him for. He also had a cameo on season 2 of “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” in 2023 and shared information about the passing of his daughter Emeline, better known as Emmy.
PEOPLE covered the emotional moment, reporting that Miller broke down in tears while speaking with fellow contestants about his family. “It was brutal,” he said, recalling the day Emmy slipped out the back door and fell into a neighbor’s pool.
When asked how he coped with such a tragedy, Miller’s answer was simple and raw. “It does not go away,” he told the group quietly. Emmy was just 19 months old when she drowned in June 2018.
How The Tragedy Reshaped Miller’s Entire World
NBC Sports reported that in the months following Emmy’s death, Miller made a sweeping decision to relocate his family. He moved them part-time to Big Sky, Montana, trading their Southern California life for the mountains.
He explained the move was driven by a desire to be closer to nature and raise his children with a stronger sense of grit and independence. He drew from his own childhood in Franconia, New Hampshire, where he grew up without running water or electricity.
He told the Associated Press at the time that “after losing Emmie, we definitely reflected on how we were raising our kids.” The tragedy made him refocus on his priorities and put the family first.

In his new role at Big Sky Resort, Miller will be helping to build the resort’s ski programs and hosting camps, while also playing an active part in the resort’s development. After the loss of their daughter, he and his wife, Morgan, also worked to raise awareness about water safety.
Miller still likes to play the slopes with his kids, but he said he isn’t interested in competing again. Despite his ongoing involvement in the sport through mentorship and community engagement, the six-time Olympic medalist feels that chapter is over.
Bode Miller’s legacy extends beyond the slopes as the father of seven and a long-time champion of water safety with his wife, Morgan. Having his own name and character again in question, can he put this new controversy behind him and safeguard the legacy he worked so hard to build?
