Mar. 18—GRAND FORKS — UND might have to play the NCAA Regionals without center Ollie Josephson.

Josephson was hurt in the second period of UND's National Collegiate Hockey Conference semifinal game against Minnesota Duluth last Saturday.

Josephson was checked low by Minnesota Duluth captain and defenseman Joey Pierce. The freshman center left the ice slowly, went down the locker room tunnel and never returned.

UND coach Dane Jackson did not rule Josephson out for the regionals, but indicated it was unlikely he'll be ready.

"He's doing a lot of work rehab-wise," Jackson said. "I think there's a chance, but I'd say probably a slim one."

UND will learn its NCAA regional assignment at 2 p.m. Sunday, when the selection show is on ESPNU. The Fighting Hawks are

likely to end up in Sioux Falls, S.D.

UND has had bad luck with injuries in the NCHC tournament in the last decade.

Top defensemen — Tucker Poolman in 2017, Jake Sanderson in 2022 and Garrett Pyke in 2024 — all suffered season-ending injuries in the NCHC playoffs and missed the NCAA tournament.

Josephson has played in all 37 games for UND this season, tallying six goals and 20 points. He's been hot offensively as of late, tallying eight points in the last six games.

Josephson has generally centered the team's third line, while also earning time on the penalty kill and power play. He's winning 55.8% of his faceoffs this season.

UND recruited Josephson, a native of Victoria, B.C., from the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League.

If there's a bright spot for UND, it's that Jack Kernan has returned to practice after missing Saturday's NCHC semifinal due to an illness. Kernan was a full go on Wednesday.
