LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Team USA opened group stage play in the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup presented by RAXUS with an eye-opening 22-2 win over Korea Wednesday evening.
USA collected 13 hits and slammed five home runs in a game that was called after five innings. Right fielder Olivia Pichardo slammed two home runs, and she drove in four runs. Shortstop Jamie Brown went 3-3 at the plate with a home run and seven RBIs.
Centerfielder Kelsie Whitmore homered, and she drove in three runs. First baseman Naomi Ryan had two hits and 3 RBIs, and DH Michele Schaber also hit a home run.
Jillian Albayati was the starting pitcher for Team USA. She struck out the side in the first inning. She pitched three innings allowing one earned run while striking out five batters. Sarah Lessig pitched the final two innings. She did not allow a hit, and she struck out four batters.
Team USA is ranked second in the World behind only seven-time World Cup champion Japan. Japan is playing in the other Group Stage event in Taiwan. The top three teams that emerge out of each Group Stage event will advance to the World Cup Finals next year (July 2027) which will also be played in Rockford/Loves Park at Rivets Stadium.
The other opening day winners Wednesday at Rivets Stadium were Canada 13-0 over Hong Kong, China and Australia 12-2 over Mexico.
The following three games will be played Thursday at Rivets Stadium:
11a.m.-Australia vs. Hong Kong, China
3 p.m.-Korea vs. Canada
7 p.m.-Mexico vs. USA
