CLEVELAND — Sergio Vega completed his undefeated season without ever being taken down. And he got the takedown he had to have with 23 seconds left in the sudden-victory overtime period for a 4-1 win over top-seeded and undefeated Jesse Mendez of Ohio State.

After a scoreless first period Saturday night at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Vega fought his way out for an escape 42 seconds into the second and remained up 1-0 at the end of the period.

Mendez escaped shortly into the third, and nearly had a reversal, but Vega fought it off.

Vegas becomes the first undefeated NCAA champion as a true freshman since 1947.
